PROJECT 1: AUDIO EDITING EXERCISE

: Exercise 1 — Audio Dubbing

Figure 3.1 Slides with instructions for Project 1 Exercise 1 Audio Dubbing

We were introduced to our first project which is audio editing exercises. The first exercise is known as Audio Dubbing. We are instructed to sync the required audios in the footage provided which is a specific scene from the movie "Everything, Everywhere, All At Once". We will be completing this exercise in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Audio Breakdown Spreadsheet

During the week 3 class, I was grouped with my classmates to complete the spreadsheet. Me and my teammates discussed and completed the spreadsheet together. With ideas pouring after class, I decided to make a few adjustments and did some further refining, and uploading all the links for the sound effects I will be using to complete my video.

Imported Files

All the audios are downloaded and organised into folders. These folders are divided into 3 parts, which is Ambience Sounds, Hard Sound Effects, and Voiceovers.

Editing Process

I first imported the provided video to Premiere Pro, as well as my voiceover recordings from my phone to my laptop. I started off by synching the voiceover to the video, and adjusted the speed and pitch.

Next, the ambience sound effects are added. It is adjusted to a lower volume so that it does not obstruct the voiceover and sound effects.

Lastly, the most important audio files are added in, which is the hard sound effects. This includes the sounds of wood breaking, pipe leaking, footsteps, and so on.

For certain sounds, I followed the video and adjusted it to a soft volume for the suitable scenes. For the swoosh sound effect, I made use of the Channel volume, and adjusted either left or right to have the audio only. This makes it more realistic and improves the overall quality of the audio.

PROJECT 1: AUDIO EDITING EXERCISE

: Exercise 2 — Sound Shaping

To Do:
  • Record voice line that's at least 5 seconds
  • Import and Edit the voice line in Adobe Audition
  • Edit the voice sound like a phone call, coming from inside a closet, coming from a toilet, coming from a cave, and sound like an alien or orc.
Recorded voice-line

Since, Mr Martin did not gave a detailed requirements for the voice-line, I decided to record one that is in English, and to say the line: "Hello, is anyone there?". As I think this line works with all the required sounds.

Sound Shaping in Adobe Audition

After I decided on the sound recording voice-line that I will be using to edit, I imported it into my laptop and started to edit in Adobe Audition.

Voice of Phone Call
I used the parametric equalizer sound effects and bring down the bass and tremble and raised the mid range to 870Hz.

Voice from inside a closet (muffled voice)
For this audio, I used back the same effect which is parametric equalizer but this time the bass remains the same. I also decreased the tremble value and raised the mid range value to the top.

Voice of Alien / Orc voice
For this audio, I applied two effects to it, one being pitch shifter and one being modulation (flanger). For pitch shifter, I reduced the semi tones and cents. For the modulation rack effect flanger, I choose "too many pills" as the presets because it sounds very "alieny". I adjusted the initial delay time, final delay time, stereo phasing, feedback, and modulation rate.

 REFLECTIONS

I had a good experience with this task. I learned to use new softwares such as Adobe Audition, as well as get more familiar with Adobe Premiere Pro.  The hardest part was to look for free audio effects online that could match with the provided video.

Overall, it was a fun experience as this project was really interesting and new to me.
