INSTRUCTIONS

Task 3: Design (40%)

After analysing the design of your choice in Task 2, you will now produce a work of design, inspired and influenced by the one you had analysed, or as a reaction to it. You should also apply your knowledge of design principles in your creation.

  • You may use any medium and/ or materials that are suitable to convey your visual message.
  • Direct use of photographs is not permitted. Any work that is found plagiarised will result in an F grade for the overall module and the student will be subjected to the policies of the University concerning academic misconduct.
  • The blog must contain all the work done and completed for this module, along with a final reflection.
Requirements:
Task 3 Design post
  • A recap of Task 3 brief
  • Some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire your own ideas
  • 3-5 sketches (manual/ digital) of your own ideas
  • Final design in A4 size, JPEG
  • A rationale, in about 150-200 words, explaining/ defending the decisions made in your design, the meaning/ purpose of the design and the design principles that are found in the design.
  • Feedback from the lecturer
Final Compilation post
  • Ensure all tasks are completed and each post is under the label of Design Principles GCD60804
  • Link to Task 1
  • Link to Task 2
  • Link to Task 3 and the final design from the Task 3. Label the design as <Your Name_Title of Design_Task 3>
  • A final reflection that responds to the questions: What have I learnt in this module? What did I enjoy the most? What did I not enjoy the most? What have I learnt about myself through this module? What has changed and what has not in my learning journey? What could be improved in this module?

Marking Criteria:

  • Develop a critical sense to analyse and realise the impact of design throughout society, in commerce, and on the environment and be able to effectively create a work of design that communicates the idea clearly.
Marking Rubric:
  • Beginning (0-10)— Lacking idea exploration and visual solution without development throughout. Blog is incomplete.
  • Developing (11-20)— Satisfactory design outcome that attempts resolution and creativity but does not show evidence of adequate development to better express intention. Blog is incomplete.
  • Mastering (21-30)— Produces an adequate design solution through visual analysis but the idea misses some of the larger issues. Blog is complete but not well organised.
  • Outstanding (31-40)— Displays ability to recognise and appropriately consider aspects of the composition to communicate a complex idea clearly that could have impact on viewers. Blog is complete and well organised.
Learning Goals:
  • To apply and communicate the knowledge and understanding of design principles through a work of design with a purpose.
  • To organise and synthesise written and visual outputs into a final blog.
Timeframe: 2 Weeks (Week 5 - Week 7)

Deadline: Week 7

TASK 3 BRIEF & RECAP

Recap of Task 3 brief:
We are tasked to produce a design work inspired by the artwork we chose to analyse in Task 2. After learning and understanding the design principles, we have to apply this knowledge into creating an artwork in any medium, to convey the visual message, which is Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

SUBMISSIONS

To clearly organise the "behind-the-scenes" and design work of my artwork, I have prepared a presentation slide that includes the required information stated in the Task 3 brief. It includes: Visual references, sketches, progression layers, and rationale with explanations of design principles that can be applied to my final artwork.

Presentation Slide:

Rationale (199 words):

“Hand in hand, teach peace” is the artwork I have made to serve a purpose of invoking the idea of peace around the world. In this design, I have chosen to use a globe hand as a symbol of “giving your hand” to tell the audience to cooperate and help each other regardless of their origin. Furthermore, the dove shaped thumb on the hand is to convey the meaning of freedom where people are free from all forms of injustice.

The use of contrasting colours in the artwork is also used to create a sense of variety which symbolises the difference among people while cool colours are used to create a feeling of peace and balance within the chaotic nature and contrasting differences of people. Besides that, the globe hand being placed in the middle is to get the attention of the audience and spread the core message of the artwork. Thus, the main message of the artwork - “Make the world a better place by teaching and sharing peace around the world” can be effectively sent to the audience through these elements that are strategically placed which aligns with the UNSDG Goal of achieving peace, justice, and strong institutions.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
Specific Feedback: Dr Yip mentioned that my sketch is good and I can proceed to digitalising it. But she said that I should have 3 sketches in total to meet the requirements for submissions.

REFLECTIONS

After completing Task 1 and Task 2, I did some research and applied the knowledge I have into implementing the design principles in my artwork. I drew a total of 3 sketches, I started progressing on my first sketch, which I think it is the best out of the rest. While designing my artwork digitally, I am able to apply my understanding of design principles throughout the process. I was happy with how my design turned out, as it was able to convey the message of Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

I have learnt the importance of utilising design principles into my design works, as it enhances my design. Throughout this process, I also learnt a few new skills such as using the Inflate tool on Adobe Illustrator. I had the opportunity to try different fonts and applying the right angle of shadows into my artwork.
